The combination of X-ray technology and Metal Detector technology is a complimentary relationship. Where an X-ray system lacks (Aluminum detection) a metal detector excels and where a metal detector lacks detection (316 Stainless Steel) an X-ray system excels. A combination of the two technologies therefore is the best assurance of detecting metal contaminants of all types (provided the packaging will allow for metal detection)

Calibrated spherical test samples are provided to us and made by Regal Packaging Services, Inc. These standards are in compliance with standards traceable to the National Institute of Standards Technology Test No. 821/254254-94.

Since contaminants rarely come in spherical form we often use a sample which is provided to us by the customer and deemed detectable and acceptable. (This is usually done during initial testing to determine if we can meet the customers’ needs for sensitivity).

 X-ray Systems

An X-ray system works based on detecting the difference in densities between the product and the contaminant. Many contaminants have similar density (atomic properties) characteristics to food products.  A contaminant must be of greater density than the product for x-ray technology to be successful.

Metal Detector Systems

A metal detectors ability to detect metal is based on total volume or mass associated with the metal fragments.  The size of the metal detector aperture is based on product size and composition.  Sensitivity is relative to product signal.
